When I was young, I remember singing this hymn every morning in school ‘God be in my head’’ it says:
God be in my head, and in my understanding
God be in mine eyes, and in my looking
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking
God be in my heart, and in my thinking
God be at my end, and at my departing
Funny how this hymn only made more sense to me 18 or more years after I recited it. I woke up this morning with the song in my head and with a God given insight to write about it, to talk about – ‘’our need for the GOD’’. Let me start by saying that people mistake ‘’the need for A God’’ for ‘’the need for THE God’’. Well let’s go back to our basic English”
A: Indefinite Article (Not a specific object, one of a number of the SAME objects).
THE: Definite Article (A specific object that both the person speaking and listener know).
You see, there is only one God and he is not the same with any other neither is he one of the others. I am in no way apologetic for some of the things I write here, I know some Christians today try to be diplomatic saying ‘’we all serve the same God but it’s just the ways we do it that it is different’’. Well, the bible says in John 14: 6 that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and no one cometh to the father but by him. My opinion is in no way different from that. He is simply the door to being saved; in him and him alone we find pasture and life in abundance.
Living outside the true God is simply living outside the plan of he who created you. Who better knows a thing and it’s ending that the creator of It.? There is a daily need for God in our lives because without him our passions, ideas, abilities become purposeless and fruitless. Without him we are just baskets that can hold no water. Thank God for the Holy Spirit who was sent to us to guide us and teach us all things, so we never at any point have to run at a loss. So many people have bought into this lie that Christianity is boring, that it means giving up the things that are fun and walking on one straight road. No that’s not it, Faith is fun, Love is fun, everything is fun when you take a walk with the God whose presence is full of joy and in whose right hand you find unending pleasures[Psalm 16:11].
Ok back to the lyrics of the song, let me take them one by one:
God be in my head, and in my understanding: God gives us understanding, not just in some things but in all things.[ 2 Timothy 2:7].Things become so easy when we just trust God with all our heart, when we let him be God over our whole lives rather than over the things that we think are convenient. I love the book of proverbs; it’s full of wisdom and has revealed a lot to me about some of the benefits of understanding. Let me share a few;
- Proverbs 3:13– Understanding bring happiness
- Proverbs 8:14: Understanding brings strength
- Proverbs 13:15: Understanding brings favor
- Proverbs 16: 22: Understanding is a fountain of life
- Proverbs 17; 27: Understanding brings excellence
- Proverbs 24:3: Understanding establishes
- Eph 1:18: Understanding brings a knowing of the hope to which we were called.
Understanding outside God and his word is fruitless. The bible makes us understand in psalm 119:130 that it is the unfolding of God’s word that gives light and understanding to the simple.
God be in mine eyes and in my looking- When God is your sight you see beyond the usual and norm, your perception goes beyond the five physical senses. There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing through the eyes of God. Matt. 6:22-23 says “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” May God give us the grace to see things through his eyes so that we may have to courage to do his will – through Jesus our Lord .
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking- As believers, our mouth should be a means of grace and full of wisdom. Let no rotten word come out of your mouth, but if something is good for the upbuilding of a need, (let that come out of your mouth) in order that it might give grace to those who hear. This is one weakness of mine that God is helping me with, and recently I have learnt that if it’s not giving grace why then should I say. Imagine if we had to wash our mouth with soap anytime we said something nasty, but the truth is the battle for the purity of the mouth starts in the heart because “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” So next time you say something, stop and think – Am I building the faith of others by what I say? Is my mouth a means of grace?
God be in my heart, and in my thinking- God is the treasure of our heart and it is easy to lose God as that treasure something else appears to focus on the throne of our heart. In order not to lose God as the greatest treasure we need to have God always on our mind and heart, constantly thinking of Him through his word. God and his word are not apart. It’s essential that God is in our thoughts and deeds daily, you see God has amazing plans for each one of us. He doesn’t want to keep them a secret. He wants to partner with us to make them all a reality. Joshua 1:8
God be at my end and at my departing- To me this is simple, Jesus is our beginning and our end. Nothing else should matter as much as he does. How awesome it is to just set our gaze on Jesus knowing he knows our end, and knowing that his thought for us are of good and not of evil. I totally implore us to trust God with all we are and have. His plans for us are greater than what we can imagine. Hebrews 12:2.
Remember that outside God we are hopeless and helpless. Thank God for his grace and love towards us, because of him we are forever Komplete.
